If you're on Facebook, Twitter or Snapchat, you must have experienced your news feed flooded with messages posted on those green bordered pop-ups. Wondering what new stuff is. That’s Sarahah. In Arabic Sarahah means – ‘honesty’ that has become the new internet sensation and now everyone is talking about it.
What is Sarahah app and why there’s so much obsession?
If it is just a mere app, then why people have become suddenly obsessed with it. The fact of the matter is from secret crushes to horrible bosses; people are opening up and send their messages to someone else but anonymously. Developed by Zain al-Abidib Tawfiq from Saudi Arabia in 2016, this app was initially meant for employees to give constructive feedback to their employers. "Leave a constructive message :)” one of the messages shows after a user installs the app.
How much is the popularity of this app?
According to Fortune.com, Sarahah had rocketed to the top of the charts, becoming the most popular free download from the U.S. iOS App Store, and the second most popular free app on Google Play in July last week. The app is available on the Android as well the iOS platform. The site had garnered more than 270 million views and 20 million users in just a few weeks, according to bbc.com.
Then, what’s the problem?
Due to the anonymity provided, the newly popular app, has raised some concerns of cyberbullying. It is said, one can easily become a victim of harassment through social media as it is not a new phenomenon. Tawfiq according to BBC said, “Misuse is a challenge for all social networks. In Sarahah, we do believe, that one case is too many. We’ve taken a lot of measures, I don’t want to give details of these measures, because I don’t want to make the misuser’s job easier. But we do have features such as blocking, filtering, and many other techniques.”
Not the first anonymous app
Sarahah is not just the first anonymity focused app, there have been some other apps in the past such as Secret or Whisper. In the initial days, these apps had also created a lot of furore, now it remains to be seen how Sarahah is going to remain active among the users, only time will tell.
