Putting an end to all speculation, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially confirmed former allrounder and team director Ravi Shastri as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team for a two-year period. Shastri’s tenure will continue until the end of the 2019 ICC World Cup.
The board has also appointed former fast bowling pacer Zaheer Khan as the team's bowling consultant while former batting legend and captain Rahul Dravid was named as batting consultant for overseas tours. The decision was taken by three-member panel of Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman.
Former cricketers including Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus and Lalchand Rajput were other contenders who had applied for the high-profile job, after Anil Kumble announced his resignation ahead of the recently-concluded West Indies tour because of Kohli's reservations against his 'style'.
Shastri who had the audacity to wear many hats over the years in the world of cricket as a commentator, or a director has added one more feather to his cap as the new head coach for team India led by Virat Kohli. Shastri's wealth of experience will certainly bring something for Virat Kohli’s side as the latter had good relations with him in the past. Similarly Zaheer’s experience will bring fresh lease to India’s bowling unit and Dravid's expertise as batting consultant will be enormously helpful for youngsters.
