The Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of the Buddhist community turns 82 today. The spiritual leader, revered by the Tibetans as a 'living god' on Thursday morning joined with thousands of Tibetans in Leh to celebrate his 82nd birthday. The Dalai Lama is considered as the most revered spiritual leaders and inspirational figures of the 20th century.
Born in 1935 in northeastern Tibet, the Lhamo Thondup was recognized the 14th Dalai Lama at age 2 and at the age of 16, he was given full power as the political leader of Tibet. His activism for a free and democratic Tibet led an uprising against the Chinese rule in 1959. Since then he fled to India and has spent his time in exile pushing for complete independence for Tibet or self-determination as per the UN charter. As per reports, around 100,000 Tibetans live in India.
The spiritual leader has devoted his life for highlighting his non-violent campaign for democracy and freedom in his homeland and in pursuit of humanitarian and environmental causes. In 1989, the Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
