If you are an admin of any Whatsapp of Facebook group, then you should be extremely careful from now onwards, as any offensive post on such groups can land you in a serious trouble. Offensive post such as a rumour, a fake news story or even videos circulated through Whatsapp group can now land you in jail, according to a joint government order stated by the district magistrate of Varanasi and the city’s police chief.
Social media platforms allow any user to create a group and share the information through text, photograph or videos. However, in recent past, there have been number of fake news and videos circulated on such groups which at times have created law and order problems. In order to curb the misuse activities on social media, the local administration in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency came up with this new order.
“There are several groups on social media which are named on newsgroups and also groups with other names which are propagating news and information which is not authentic. These are being forwarded without cross-checking,” the joint order stated quoting PTI report.
The joint order issued by the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police has made it clear, group administrator is the soul responsible person for all the information and if any factually incorrect post, rumour or misleading information is found, it could lead in an FIR against the group administrator.
The order stated directives are being issued to social media groups, WhatsApp and Facebook group administrators and members. There are over 200 million WhatsApp users in India while Facebook has 166 million.
"In the event of inaction from the group admin, he or she will be considered guilty and action will be taken against the group admin," the order further stated. Such a post must also be reported to the nearest police station, it added.
Admins, be responsible for your social media groups.
