Not talking much, being alone most of the time, and being shy are the common traits found among the introverts. However, there is one thing that stands them out than the rest ones. Oft-overlooked introverts are more likely to be successful to handle the bigger roles, according to a new study.
According to the Researchers from ghSmart, a Chicago-based consultancy firm has spent a decade on examining the personalities of 2,000 CEOs and found that the majority of successful CEOs were introverts.
The study was carried by the CEO Genome Project, through a test which finds out what it takes to be a CEO. The study mentions most CEOS had come from different backgrounds and some even didn’t complete their graduation. “In fact, they come from surprisingly varied backgrounds. Of the six million CEOs of companies in America, only seven per cent went to an elite school—and eight percent didn't graduate college at all. Some are immigrants; many worked their way up through the ranks from entry-level positions,” the study reads.
Researchers made the observation on various assessments including biographical information, job performance, demographic information and comprehensive performance appraisals.
From these findings, it was found that the four most important traits for CEOs are:
And about half of the candidates had more than one of these characteristics. "The biggest aha, overall, is that some of the things that make CEOs attractive to the board have no bearing on their performance," Elena Lytkina Botelho, and a co-founder of the project told The Washington Post. "Like most human beings, they get seduced by charismatic, polished presenters. They simply do better in interviews."
Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, is known to be an introvert, but an excellent leader
Most CEOs as charismatic and extroverted, many of the top CEOs, including Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, are known to be introverts.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, is known to be a classic introvert.
