Almost 90 percent of world’s population follows any religion. Regular religious practice benefits individuals, families, and communities, and thus the countries as a whole. There has been enough research which states that the practice of religion improves health, academic achievement, and economic well-being and also fosters self-control, self-esteem, empathy, and compassion.
Here are five reasons why people love to follow religion and have utmost belief on faith.
1. Because religion help with society’s problems
The practice of religion and individual’s religious beliefs can address many of the nation's most pressing social problems. The most serious problems may include out-of-wedlock births and family dissolution. Further, the research has indicated that the practice of religion among individuals leads to reductions in the incidents of divorce, crime, delinquency, drug and alcohol addiction, out-of-wedlock births, health problems, anxiety, and prejudice.
2. Because faith address social injustices and issues
Faith is an important factor that contributes the growth of an individual as a whole. Faith-based outreach has been uniquely effective in drug addiction rehabilitation and societal re-entry programs for prisoners. Faith also encourages people to accept things which are not in their control. According to social scientists, the effects of religious belief and practice are intergenerational and cumulative.
3. Because religion shapes your mentality
Religion is one of the major factors for an individual that shapes his mentally and personality towards the community where he or she is living. As the person grows up, he is affected by the religious texts and that shapes his beliefs and perspectives in a particular community.
4. Because faith provides you meaning and purpose
Many people adhere to religion for the sake of their souls, but regular participation in faith-based activities help you cope with many of the puzzling questions that surround the meaning of existence. Why I have been brought to this world? What is the purpose in life?
5. Because religion binds communities together
Religion makes you feel better about yourself by making you feel part of your larger culture. Many reports indicate that people who are religious have higher self-esteem and better psychological adjustment than people who aren’t. People who practice religion not only avail benefits at individual level, but play a vibrant role in communities. Religiously active men and women are often more sensitive to others, more likely to serve and give to those in need, and more likely to be productive members of their communities.
