Today marks the celebration of International Yoga Day. The United Nations announced 21 June as the International Day of Yoga on 11 December 2014 after recognizing its universal appeal. The purpose of International Day of Yoga is to raise awareness across the world and to highlight the many benefits of practicing yoga.
The word ‘yoga’ has been derived from Sanskrit which means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness. Today the day is observed in many parts of the world and its practice continues to grow in popularity. The theme for the 2017 celebration is 'Yoga for Health.' The UN describes the theme highlights the fact that yoga can contribute in a holistic way to achieving equilibrium between mind and body.
